The Burton Awards academic board will select 20 law school students to honor with “Distinguished Legal Writing” Award. This great honor will be given to the authors of legal articles that demonstrate creativity, knowledge, and know-how. While the length and subject matter of the legal articles are not limited, the winners will display a true understanding and mastery of the law and their writing must be clear, cogent and concise.

AWARD CRITERIA: The Burton Awards academic board will select 20 law school students to honor with “Distinguished Legal Writing” Award. This great honor will be given to the authors of legal articles that demonstrate creativity, knowledge, and know-how. While the length and subject matter of the legal articles are not limited, the winners will display a true understanding and mastery of the law and their writing must be clear, cogent and concise.

Only one article may be submitted on behalf of a law school. There is no fee or charge.

Only deans, directors of legal writing or their designees may nominate an applicant. If the school does not have a Legal Writing Director, the most senior legal writing teacher either by years or position is also fine.

Articles must have a publication date between October 16, 2022 and November 17, 2023, even if they are actually printed at a later date.

The article must have appeared in any publication printed at a law school, including law reviews and journals, and may be a note, a comment, or an article.

This completed nomination form, together with a copy of the article, should be submitted online at www.burtonawards.com and must be received by November 17, 2023. No submissions will be accepted after this date. NO EXCEPTIONS.

The subject of the article can be devoted to any legal topic. The length of the article is not limited.

Please note: In addition, you must submit a 125 word narrative biographical summary written in the third person and a high resolution, color photograph at the time of nomination.
